Cashew Corpn Launches Value-Added Products

Kochi: The Kerala State-owned Cashew Development Corporation (KSCDC), for the first time departing from its over eight decades-old traditional business of selling bulk cashew kernels, will be launching four innovative products on April 15.

The products will be marketed through selected distributors in India and the Gulf and the company has already entered into a tie up with the State Trading Corporation Ltd.

Dr K. A. Retheesh, Managing Director of KSCDC told Business Line that he had taken the initiative to add value to cashew kernels so as to increase its turnover and profits and ultimately ,to extricate the company from the red.

“There was no true value addition in the industry for last 88 years. Even though packaging is to preserve the quality of the product, now it is an effective communication tool about the product,” he said. The packing of new products from KSCDC is of International Standard. The sponsored research to develop new products from cashew was given to prestigious Central Food Technology Research Institute of India (CFTRI) as the initial steps in 2005, he said. With the research support of the Institute, four products have been developed and commercial production started.

First among them is the “cashew soup”, which is a very innovative one and is in vogue with the current life style of people. It is possible to use it as an instant drink by just putting the soup mix to boiled water. There is no need for other ingredients.

The second product is “cashew vita”, a health drink targeting the growing children. This powder can be added to boiled milk and given to children.

“Cashew powder” is the third product, which is very suitable for the working women. They do not have to bother about grinding cashew kernels in mixies. It can be used as an ingredient to the preparations. All these products are in very attractive packages, he said.

Traditionally, it is proved that cashew is a most accepted snack taken along with hot drinks. Targeting the middle class people, consuming liquor, the fourth product “cashew bits” is prepared.

All these products are manufactured in the company’s new facilities in its Kottiyam factory in Kerala’s Kollam district. All the machineries are custom made as per the recommendations of the CFTRI, he said. At present, the unit will produce 100 kg/day per shift of products, depending upon the market demand the capacity will be increased by adding more modules, he said.
