Coonoor: Vigneshwar Estate Tea Factory created record at the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) when its invoice of specialty teas fetched Rs 108 a kg. The tea auctioned by Paramount Tea Marketing (SI) P Ltd, was bought by Sunil Tea Co. This was the highest price fetched by any CTC tea in 2008 at Coonoor auctions.
The catalogue and the bag announced that the tea had won the Golden Leaf Award in Dubai last month. “Although it is manufactured by bought-leaf factory, it won the award in the ‘Nilgiri category’ competing with the teas from corporate sector. Vigneshwar Estate Tea Factory has won the award for the third consecutive year”, Ramesh Bhojarajan, Managing Director, told Business Line.
Darmona Estate got Rs 103, Homedale Estate Rs 97, Green View Estate Rs 92, Hittakkal Estate Rs 87.
Among the orthodox teas from corporate sector, Prammas got Rs 126 a kg, Curzon Rs 121, Kodanaad Rs 118 and Tiger Hill Rs 117.
Prices generally rose Rs 2-3 a kg as the demand was strong to absorb the 41-week low offer of 6.84 lakh kg. “Better liquoring CTC leaf grades witnessed good demand with the prices advancing substantially. Strong demand prevailed for better medium grades. Medium brokens sold Rs 2-3 a kg more. Smaller brokens and fannings were dearer by Rs 3-4.
Leafy orthodox fetched Rs 2 more. BOPFs sold dearer by Rs 2. Strong demand prevailed on all categories of CTC dusts. Prices gained Rs 2-3. Secondary orthodox dusts advanced a rupee. Residuals gained Rs 2”, an auctioneer said.
On the export front, Pakistan and Egypt were forceful on fannings. CIS was active on medium and plainer bolder grades.
The bottom line increased to Rs 46 from Rs 45 last week. Quotations held by the brokers indicated bids ranging from Rs 46 to 48 a kg for the plain leaf grades and Rs 60-80 for the brighter liquoring sorts. They ranged Rs 50-52 for the plain dust grades and Rs 62-78 for the brighter liquoring sorts.
