The harvest season of chana has begun and the market is seeing the new stock of chana arrive on a daily basis from this month. This is that time of the year when the new stock of chana enters the Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) market starting with crop from Maharashtra from this month onwards.
The prices of the desi chana in the wholesale market are hovering around Rs 2,700 to Rs 2,750 per quintal while it varies with difference in quality. The higher quality chana is priced Rs 500 higher than the lower quality ones. Traders from the grain market informed that due to the hike in the prices of diesel and petrol a direct impact is witnessed on the prices of other commodities as well.
"The prices are not expected to come down even as the crop in this season is good and the supply is also more," said a wholesale trader. The supply of chana has commenced from Maharashtra which will be followed by Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Karnataka. One of the traders said that the supply line is good in the harvest season and hence the prices are expected to reduce when the flow increases in April and May.
However, it will not last long as the prices will increase further. Sharad Maru from GROMA informed that the chana is imported from Australia and Tanzania in the month of August.
Apart from desi chana, the various other variety of chana such as mosambi chana, green chana are expected to flow into the market. Another trader, however, informed that the supply and demand of green chana is less compared to the others. The fresh stocks of other pulses, meanwhile, are expected to flow into the market only after Holi.
