Mangoes Set To Hit The Market Soon

With winters being extremely severe, it has seen its effect on the seasonal arrival of mangoes into the market which was expected to flow into the market in full-swing by March end. According to the traders from the Agriculture Producers Market Committee (APMC), as compared to the last year, only one third of the crop is entering the market on a daily basis.

The high prices of the mangoes, therefore can be attributed to the less supply coming into the market during this time of the year. Vijay Dhoble from APMC fruit market informed that due to global warming and this year's intense winter has led to the delay in the ripening of mangoes.

"Harsh winter took toll on the new flowering in January which lead to the delay," he said. Meanwhile, this has seen its effect on the export as well. Currently mangoes are exported to countries in the Middle East and some exporters also sending it to the UK. "The export of mangoes this year as compared to last year is less by around 30 to 40 per cent as the prices of mangoes are extremely high. It is very difficult to export it at this price," said a fruit exporter.

The prices of mangoes per box are hovering around Rs 2, 500 in the wholesale market.

However, mangoes are expected to flood the markets by April and May. Currently mangoes are coming in from Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Raigad district. India produces over 50 per cent of the world production of mangoes and it exports around 1,27,33,000 metric tonne, according to the 2002-03.

At present, India is exporting to Middle East countries, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Japan and the US.
