Covering Buys Lift Spot Rubber Prices

Kottayam: Spot rubber improved further on Tuesday. Covering groups and purchase agents lifted the rates to even better levels in the wake of declining supplies and increase in demand from the tyre sector. RSS 4 rose to Rs 106 from Rs 105 and Rs 105.50 a kg respectively at Kottayam and Kochi. RSS 3 closed better by 42 paise at Rs 115.75 a kg at Bangkok spot. The April futures for the grade inched up to ¥286 (Rs 113.14) from ¥285 a kg at TOCOM.

March futures slip

On NMCE, the March contract slipped to Rs 105 (105.40) a kg while the April futures finished almost steady at Rs 108.40 (108.36), May at Rs 110.80 (110.69) and June at Rs 112.15 (112.13) per kg for RSS 4.The open interest was quoted at 6,802 (6,965) tonnes with 2,675 (2,968) tonnes in March, 2,550 (2,471) tonnes in April, 976 (942) tonnes in May and 601 (584) tonnes in June. The volumes dropped to 1,719 (1,940) tonnes trading 211 (373) tonnes in March, 997 (963) tonnes in April, 381 (449) tonnes in May and 130 (155) tonnes in June.

Spot prices were (Rs/kg): RSS-4: 106 (105); RSS-5: 103.50 (102.50); ungraded: 102 (101); ISNR 20: 103 (102) and latex 60 per cent: 74 (74).
