Coonoor: The Union Budget created a welcome ambience at Sale No: 9 of the auctions of the Coonoor Tea Trade Association (CTTA) here on Saturday, resulting in the prices looking up.
Prices generally increased Rs 2 a kg over the previous week as buyers competed to pick up the most possible volume from the 39-week low offer of 7.22 lakh kg. Even the bottom line increased to Rs 45 a kg from Rs 43 at which it was ruling the last few weeks.
On the corporate buying front, Hindustan Unilever Ltd, Duncans and Godfrey Philips India Ltd bought good medium sorts.
“In the leaf counter, high-priced CTC teas got a rupee a kg more. Blacker grainy types got Rs 2 more. Primary whole leaf orthodox grades fetched Rs 1 to 2 more. In the dust counter, brighter liquoring sorts got Rs 2 more. Good and better mediums were dearer by a rupee. Plainer descriptions appreciated Rs 2 in value. Primary orthodox dusts were dearer by Rs 3. Some gained still more on competition. Finer dusts also gained Rs 2,” an auctioneer told Business Line.
On the export front, Egypt bought CTC dusts paying Rs 49 to 51 a kg. CIS supported medium and plainer bolder grades in the range of Rs 44 to 47. Pakistan selected blacker teas for Rs 49 to 51.
Among the CTC teas from bought-leaf factories, Darmona Estate got the highest price of Rs 99 a kg, followed by Homedale Estate Rs 95. Green View Estate got Rs 90, Kannavarai Rs 84 and Hittakkal Speciality Tea Rs 84.
Among the orthodox teas from corporate sector, Prammas got Rs 128 a kg, followed by Curzon Rs 126 a kg, Kairbetta and Tiger Hill Clonal Rs 124, Corsley Rs 120, Chamraj Rs 115, Mailoor and Kodanaad Rs 108 and Havukal Rs 106.
