Kochi: With a view to integrating ornamental fish breeding and exports into the global market, the Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) in association with the Ornamental Fish International has organised the international ornamental aquatic event Indaquaria 08 – which comes in conjunction with the India International Aqua Show in Kochi. Addressing a press conference in Kochi, Mohan Kumar, Chairman of MPEDA, said: “Indaquaria is envisioned to effectively showcase the infinite promise and potential of Indian ornamental fish industry.”
The three-day event comprises of technical sessions, business session with reputed overseas importers and farm visits.
The ornamental fish sector is a small and vibrant segment of the fisheries sector in India, which has the potential for tremendous growth and large scale employment generation. At present, ornamental fish exports from India are mostly dependant on wild caught fishes and the main collection areas are along the Western Ghats, North-East India, West Bengal, parts of Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.
• Quarterly results of corporates: Check out
Though ornamental fish exports have increased from Rs 3.2 crore in 2001-02 to Rs 5.6 crore in 2006-07, it remains quite insignificant compared to other developing countries.
Now MPEDA has evolved a vision to boost export oriented ornamental fish trade and achieve an export target of $50 million by 2012.
Development of captive breeding technology for prioritised indigenous varieties of ornamental fish, developing strategies to network ornamental fish breeders in India, standardising methods for diagnosing viral diseases in ornamental fishes are some of the measures envisaged to extend ornamental fish breeding and exports from the country.
