Farmers Told To Make Best Use Of Resources

Mangalore: The 27th annual Kissan Mela — organised by the Dakshina Kannada-based non-governmental organisation Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) — began at Sirsi in Uttara Kannada district on Thursday with a call to introduce technologies and to make best use of resources for better farming.

Speaking at the inauguration, Dr D. Veerendra Heggade, Chairman of SKDRDP, said that farmers should have a scientific approach for cultivation of crops.

Main Resources

Terming land, water, human resource and information as the main resources for any farmer, he said farmers should make better use of these resources for their benefit.

There is a need for farmers to go in for technology-assisted agricultural practices. Dr Heggade said that equal importance should be given for both the short-term and long-term crops.

The decline in the number of agriculturists and the lack of interest among some farmers are affecting the agriculture sector, he said.

Organic farming

Dr L.H. Manjunath, Executive Director of SKDRDP, told Business Line from Sirsi that organic agriculture grabbed the attention of all in this year’s Kissan Mela.

There are several stalls on organic agricultural produces and organic fertilisers and pesticides at the mela.

The advisory centre for farmers, manned by agricultural scientists and progressive farmers, has also been attracting a good number, he added.
